Another One Bites the Dust

One more month of 2010 GONE. Wasn’t it just yesterday that we were grilling out for The Fourth of July?

So bring on August! It’s the last month of our hottest part of summer (THANK GOD!!!); it’s the official start of my marathon training; and it’s when we always take our end-of-summer trip to Florida. It’s gonna be a good month!

About this marathon training… 18 weeks from tomorrow we will be running the streets of Vegas! Woot! To get us there, we’ve decided on Hal Higdon’s novice program. My good buddy Hal has gotten me through my two half-marathons, so let’s see what he can do for me in a full.

The program will take care of the physical preparedness, but I know me and I know I’m gonna need a little mental stimulation along the way. Enter Clarksville Running Club! I’ve always done my training runs completely solo, but I’m going to try something new for this new marathon endeavor. I’m joining a running club. Clarksville is about an hour and a half away, so I don’t plan on joining them on their long runs just yet. I see no point in driving that far for a run that will take me less time than the drive. I’ll stick it out solo until I get into the higher mileage. I’ll wait until about week 7 or so. That’s when the long runs hit 12 miles and stay in the double digits for the duration. I talked to the lady heading up the club, and she said that she knew she had members that were going to be training for the St. Jude Marathon in Memphis, and it just so happens that that race is the very same weekend as Vegas, so there will be lots of us running the same distances every weekend. I’m pretty stoked about joining and having some company. 🙂

Also on the topic of motivation, Abbi from Higher Miles had the brilliant idea of heading up a first-time marathoner’s virtual club! There are lots of us in the blogosphere that are training for our first right now, and Abbi took the initiative and started the Distance Dreamers. I think it’s an absolutely fantastic idea, and hats off to her for organizing the whole thing!

So it seems like I’m all set! I’ve got the gear, I’ve got the support, and I’ve got the will–now if my heart, lungs, and legs will just play nice I’m golden!

Sweltering, Sweaty Saturday Sunrise Six

How’s THAT for alliteration?

A couple of weeks ago, TMB started a fun little challenge, and today I played along. Here’s how it works:

“It’s simple. Grab your camera before your next run. Take a pre-run photo of yourself. Then take one photo of whatever is directly in front of you at the end of each mile. And then, when you are done, take a post-run photo of yourself.”

In my sleep-deprived haze, I forgot to take the pre-run photo of myself, so we’ll start with this photo that I took as I walked out my front door.

It was already a very muggy 76 degrees with 100% humidity for a heat index of 84. (I’m REALLY growing weary of these crazy hot days with their crazy high humidities and heat indices.) Nevertheless, I strapped on my Fuelbelt and hit the road.

It was a gorgeous morning. I know the rules say to take a picture at every mile, but I had to throw in a few extra because it was just so darn pretty. I left the house right at sunrise, so the nighttime fog was just starting to lift.

And here we have miles 1, 2, 3, and 4:

At about mile 4.5 I ran into some more very picturesque scenery. I wish I had the camera skillz to accurately capture the beauty, but I don’t, so this is the best you get with a Kodak point-and-shoot.

It’s at about this point that I turn and start heading back home, and here’s mile 5 on the way:

I didn’t take a mile 6 photo to share because my Garmin beeped mile 6 as I was coming up my drive to my house. At the time, I was thinking, “Some things are sacred. If there are any stalkers reading my blog, they already know what town I’m in, where I work, what I drive, and where I park my unlocked car when I run certain routes. They don’t need to know which house to look for when they come to kidnap me.” But now that I think about it, it’s not like it would be all that hard to find out where I live if someone really wanted to. And I skipped on the post-run photo, too. Because I like you guys too much to subject you to that type of frizzy-haired horror. Again, in hindsight, it probably would have been okay to post it. Because if there ARE any stalkers reading my blog, that photo would have made the perfect deterrent. Cuz seriously. NOBODY would want any of THAT.

According to Galloway’s Book on Running, temperatures of 80-85 degrees will put you approximately 20% slower than your goal pace. If I ran 3 miles in 31:40 on a 104-degree day, does that mean I have a 25-minute 5K in me when it gets cooler?????

A couple of posts ago I asked you guys what makes running suck less for you. I got lots of good tips and a few ideas of things to try! Thanks for those! When running long any miles, comfort is of the utmost importance to me. I want something that doesn’t rub, bounce, slip, scratch, chafe, tickle, shift, or annoy me in any way.

Too Short

No, not the rapper dude. MY BANGS.

I’m only three weeks out from my last haircut, but my bangs were getting a little too long. I considered trimming them myself, but I was afraid I wouldn’t get it right. So I called up my stylist yesterday and asked her if she could trim them for me after work.

PSHT!!! I’d have been better off doing it myself.

I don’t know what this girl had on her mind yesterday, but it obviously wasn’t my bangs! And she has always does such a good job…

When she stepped away from between me and the mirror, I was like, “Whoa!!! Got ’em a little short there, didn’t ya?”

And she was all, “Well I can’t put ’em back!”

*SIGH* No. You can’t. If you could, we’d be sweeping the floor right now.

So it’ll be lots of headbands and ballcaps for me for the next few weeks.

May I Have Your Opinions, Please…

Ready or not, here it comes. Marathon training is just around the corner. Since so many of you have been there, done that, and got the T-Shirt (literally), I’m gonna try and tap into that experience and expertise a little bit. Tell me what you do, what you wear, what you eat, etc., that makes marathon training suck a little bit less for you! I’ve noticed that most runners have one or two things that they absolutely swear by. So whether it’s something you do before, during, or after the run, let’s hear it!

Let Freedom Ring

I absolutely love the Fourth of July. It is becoming my most favorite holiday. You still have the friend and family togetherness of Thanksgiving and Christmas without all the stress and expense of presents.

It’s been a super busy weekend but a super fun one, too.

Thursday night I was sitting on the couch in my lounge pants about 8:30 (I’m usually in bed through the week by 9 or a little after.) when I got a text message from my neice asking me if I wanted to go see Eclipse. Ummmmmm….HELL YEAH I WANNA GO SEE ECLIPSE! (Because, seriously, what self-respecting 30-year-old woman would give up the opportunity to go ogle Taylor Lautner?)

(It should be illegal.)

So I got redressed and went to see Eclipse. LOVED it. But it resulted in me not getting in bed until 1 AM. My alarm clock went off at 4:45 the next morning.

I worked all day Friday and went to the grocery afterwards to pick up everything I would need for the get-togethers this weekend. (Little did I know that would be the first of THREE grocery runs I would end up making because I kept forgetting stuff.) That evening I made this:

I was up again Friday night until after 11:00 and had the ol’ alarm set for 5:00 Saturday morning so I could run before it got hot. Mission accomplished. Sort of. I WAS out on the road by 6:00 or so, but it was already super humid. I got in my six miles but at a pretty slow pace. I was really, really hating this summer running, but I saw something on someone’s blog a couple of weeks ago that I really liked. It said, “Persevere through summer for a fruitful fall.” I wish I could remember whose blog I saw that on so I could give them props here! And Runners World has an article this month saying that for every 5 degrees above 60F you can expect a 20- to 30-second-per-mile slowdown. So I’m not hating on myself quite as much these days.

I came home and took a quick shower and then we were LAKEWARD BOUND! Remember the couple that I told you about us bumping into in Cabo? Well, we’ve been hanging out with them quite a bit lately, and they invited us to go out on their boat with them Saturday and grill at their place Saturday night. So Saturday was a great day–out on the water with good friends, good music, and plenty of beer followed by lots of good food and laughs back at their place.

Then yesterday was a great church service (we live in a lake resort town, so it was PACKED with visitors in for the holiday), and then my parents came up to visit. We ate burgers and dogs and just visited and played Skip-Bo all afternoon. I don’t think anyone else in the world can make Skip-Bo as competitive as we do.

And since the 4th was on a Sunday, the Post Office is closed today in observance. Woohoo! Bonus day! 🙂 Think I’m gonna head to the gym and come home and lay out. What about you guys? Are you off work today, too?
